Bung Tomo: A Person Who Inspires Many People

Sutomo, or also known as Bung Tomo is an Indonesian national hero whose known for his great service to maintain Indonesia's independence during the Indonesian National Revolution against the Netherlands. He succeed to be an orator who promoted the fighting spirit of Surabayan youths to fight back the colonists in the November 1945 battle.

Sutomo was born in Kampung Blauran in the centre of Surabaya to a clerk father, Kartawan Tjiptowidjojo, and mother of mixed JavaneseSundanese and Madurese descent. He had received Dutch secondary education before the Japanese occupation. Alongside menial jobs, he joined the Indonesian Scouting organisation and at the age of seventeen as the second Pramuka Garuda; a rank achieved by only three Indonesians before the Japanese occupation during World War II. During the occupation period he worked for the Dōmei Tsushin in Surabaya. Sutomo became famous by setting up Radio Pembarontakan (Radio Rebellion), which promoted unity and fighting spirit among the Indonesian youth.

Sutomo, or better known as Bung Tomo is a hard worker. At the age of 12, when he was forced to leave his education at MULO, he did various small jobs to overcome depression that hit the world at the time. Later, he finished his HBS education trough correspondence, but never officially graduated.

At his young age, Bung Tomo was active in scouting organization. He asserted that the scouting philosophy, with the nationalist consciousness he gained from this group and from his grandfather, was a good substitute for his formal education. At the age of 17, he become famous when succeed to be the second person who reached the Pandu Garuda rank in Dutch East Indies.

Bung Tomo has an interest in journalism. He once worked as a freelance journalist at Harian Soeara Oemoem in Surabaya in 1937. A year later, he become weekly editor of Pembela Rakyat also become journalist and writer of the daily corner of Javanese language, Express.

During the Japanese occupation, Bung Tomo worked in the news agency of the Japanese occupation army, Domei, Bahasa part for the whole East Java in Surabaya in 1942-1945. After the proclamation of independence, he become chief editor of Berita Antara agency in Surabaya
